  Para. 6

This is, alas, not entirely reliable, for Cardus loved a good story too much to tell his own without adding embroidery. Yet the unadorned truth, as Christopher Brookes revealed in His Own Man, a 1985 biography of Cardus, would have been impressive enough in its own right. Though Cardus, who was born in Manchester in 1889, exaggerated his early poverty, he was in fact the illegitimate son of a part-time prostitute, and it appears to be no less true that he completed only four years of formal schooling. If his childhood was not quite Dickensian in its deprivations, it was still aworking-class life of the sort well known to those familiar with the bleak annals of Victorian history.

This is, alas, not entirely reliable, for Cardus loved a good story too much to tell his own without adding embroidery.

  alas adv.

This is not entirely reliable,即:这不不可靠。

  rely v. -- reliable adj.

for部分是原因状语从句:for Cardus loved a good story too much to tell his own without adding embroidery.

  too...to...:太...

  add vt.

  embroidery n.

Yet the unadorned truth, as Christopher Brookes revealed in His Own Man, a 1985 biography of Cardus, would have been impressive enough in its own right.

句子主干:the unadorned truth would have been impressive enough in its own right.

  adorn vt. -- adornment n. --adorned adj. -- unadorned adj.

adore vt. -- adorable adj.

  truth n.

  impressive adj.

  in your own right:凭借自身的资格或努力。

as部分是非限定性定语从句,修饰truth,也可以修饰整个主句:as Christopher Brookes revealed in His Own Man, a 1985 biographyof Cardus, 即:正如CB在卡达斯1985年的传记《他自己的人》中所指出的。

  a部分是His Own Man的同位语。biography n.

  reveal vt.

Though Cardus, who was born in Manchester in 1889, exaggerated his early poverty, he was in fact the illegitimate son of a part-time prostitute, and it appears to be no less true that he completed only four years of formal schooling.

Though Cardus, who was born in Manchester in 1889, exaggerated his early poverty,

  exaggerate vt. poverty n.

主句:he was in fact the illegitimate son of a part-time prostitute, and it appears to be no less true that he completed only four years of formal schooling.

① he was infact the illegitimate son of a part-time prostitute,事实上,他是一个兼职妓女的私生子。

  legitimate adj. --legitimacy n.

  illegitimate adj.

  part-timed adj. prostitute n.

② it appears to beno less true that he completed only four years of formal schooling.

  complete vt. 完成。formal adj. schoolingn.

(50) We are thus led todistinguish, within the broad educational process which we have been so farconsidering, a more formal kind of education-thatof direct tuition or schooling.

If his childhood was not quite Dickensianin its deprivations, it was still a working-class life of the sort well known to those familiar with the bleak annals of Victorian history.

If his childhood was not quite Dickensian in its deprivations,

  quite adv. dickensian adj.

  deprive vt. -- deprivation n.

F. Dickens was born in Portsmouth,on England’s southern coast. His father was a clerk in the British navy pay office-a respectable position, but with little social status. His paternal grandparents, a steward and a house keeper possessed even less status, having been servants, and Dickens later concealed their background. Dicken’s mother supposedly came from a more respectable family. Yet two years before Dicken’s birth, his mother’s father was caught stealing and fled to Europe, never to return. The family’s increasing poverty forced Dickens out of school at age 12 to work in Warren’s Blacking Warehouse, a shoe-polish factory, where the other working boys mocked him as “the young gentleman.” His father was then imprisoned for debt. The humiliations of his father’s imprisonment and his labor in theblacking factory formed Dicken’s greatest wound and became his deepest secret. He could not confide them even to his wife, although they provide theunacknowledged foundation of his fiction.

现在看主句:it was still a working-class life of the sort well known to those familiar with the bleak annals of Victorian history.

working-class adj.

  of the sort:那样的。

well known部分是形容词短语后置定语,修饰life:well known to those familiar with the bleak annals of Victorian history.

bleakadj. annal n.

  Victorian adj.
