　　①A self-taught writer who earned his youthful keep as a public-school cricket pro, Cardus talked his way onto the staff of the Guardian at a time when that paper prided itself not only on its reflexively liberal moralizing but on its extensive coverage of the arts. ②Within two years, he had become the Guardian’s chief cricket writer, but music was his first love, and from 1927 on he doubled as its chief music critic, reviewing concerts as “N.C.” in an elaborately Edwardian style identical to the one he employed as “Cricketer.”3卡达斯是一个自学成才的人，他早年的时候，就以在公学做板球职业运动员谋生，卡达斯说服了《卫报》的工作人员，当时，《卫报》不仅以其条件反射式的自由主义道德说教和对艺术的广泛报道为傲。不到两年，他就成为了《卫报》的首席板球作家，但音乐是他的。从1927年起，他兼任《卫报》的首席音乐评论家，以“N.C.”的身份评论音乐会这是一种精心设计的爱德华七世风格，与他作为“板球运动员”时的风格完全相同。

　　a部分是是cardus的同位语，这里放在句首是为了强调：A self-taught writer who earned his youthful keep as a public-school cricket pro, 卡达斯是一个自学成才的人，他早年的时候，就以在公学做板球职业运动员谋生。

　　self-teach：自我教育。--self-taught adj. 自学的；自修的。

　　who部分是定语从句，earn your keep：挣口饭吃；为有栖身之地而工作。Pron. 专业人员；职业选手；老手。

　　现在看主句：Cardus talked his way onto the staff of the Guardian at a time when that paper prided itself not only on its reflexively liberal moralizing but on its extensive coverage of the arts.

　　句子主干：Cardus talked his way onto the staff of the Guardian。

　　talk sb’s way onto：说服某人。 staff n. 员工；全体职员。（这里是说他说服了当时《卫报》的工作人员）

　　at a time部分是状语，在什么样的时候：at a time when that paper prided itself not only on its reflexively liberal moralizing buton its extensive coverage of the arts.

　　when部分是定语从句，修饰time：that paper prided itself not only on its reflexively liberal moralizing but on its extensive coverage of the arts.

　　that paper指代《卫报》。

　　pride on：以...而自豪。

　　介词on的宾语是由not only...but also...来连接的。

　　①its reflexively liberal moralizing。条件反射式的自由说教。（这里是说当时的《卫报》专注于倡导自由）

　　reflexive adj. 反身的；反射性的；本能的。

　　moralize vt. 说教；教化；训诫。

　　②extensive coverage of the arts。对艺术的广泛报道/评论。

　　extensive adj. 广泛的；广阔的；巨大的。coverage n. 报道。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里是说卡达斯打算加入《卫报》的时候，那时的《卫报》是以倡导自由和报道艺术为傲。

　　chief adj. 主要的；首席的；n.长官；首领。

　　②music was his first love,（这句不讲，不认识就不要考研了，差得太远了）

　　③from 1927 on he doubled as its chief music critic, reviewing concerts as“N.C.” in an elaborately Edwardian style identical to the one he employed as“Cricketer.”3

　　from now on：从现在开始，把now换成1927你也要认识。

　　double as sth/double up as sth：兼任；兼做。

　　reviewing部分是分词后置定有，修饰critic：reviewing concerts as “N.C.” in an elaborately Edwardian style identical to the one he employed as“Cricketer.”3

　　用N.C.作为笔名，以一种精美的、爱德华七世时代的风格评论音乐会，这种风格和他作为板球评论家的风格是一样的。

　　in部分是状语，即：以...风格评论。elaborate vt. 详细阐述；精心制作；adj. 精心制作的；设计繁丽的。

　　identical部分是形容词短语修饰style，the one指代的卡达斯。

　　he部分是定语从句。

　　这里为什么要用the one 和cricketer（板球人），因为，那时候的《卫报》还没有允许作者使用真名，就是卡达斯评论板球时用的是“cricketer”，评论音乐是用的是“N.C.”，但是风格都是一样的。

　　3 The Guardian, like most English newspapers, did not yet allow its writers to sign their work with their real names.（这是原文给的解释）

　　总结：第八段说卡达斯是个自学成才的人，而且进入《卫报》以后，发展很快。兼任两个板块的工作。
