　　①Perhaps it happened just like that,perhaps not, but as the Italians say, if it isn’t true it ought to be. ②And when Cardus described a concert with the same impressionistic gusto, one felt inclined to say the same thing, for it was his great gift to convey the essence of a musician in phrases so vivid that the near-complete absence of technical specificity almost always goes unregretted (if not unnoticed). ③When he writes that Arturo Toscanini’s conducting of Brahms sounds like “a sort of gigantic musical wheel revolving in a ruthless groove,” or that FritzKreisler’s violin playing “reminds me of a beautiful face that would be even more beautiful if it were lined or wrinkled,” you take his point at once, and relate it effortlessly to your own memories of the performer in question.也许事情就是这样发生的，也许不是，但正如意大利人所说，如果这不是真的，那就应该是真的（差不多就是那样的吧！）。当卡达斯以同样的印象派式的热情来描述某个音乐会的时候，人们就会趋于说就是同一件事情，因为，正是他能够用如此生动的语言去描述一个音乐家的本质的伟大天赋使得这种几乎没有任何具体技巧的手法让人无憾的（只要你注意到的话）！当他写道阿图罗·托斯卡尼尼的指挥的勃拉姆斯的音乐听起来像“一种巨大的音乐车轮在无情的槽轮中旋转,”弗里茨·克莱斯勒的小提琴演奏“让我想起了一个美丽的脸，如果是布满皱纹的脸，那么，它会更加漂亮”，你立刻就能明白他说的事情，并且，很容易就把它与自己脑海中记得的相关音乐家（表演者）的表演联系起来。

　　这里是两个句子，用but连接：Perhaps it happened just like that, that指代上一段中，卡达斯描述的那些内容，就是那天发生的事情。

　　perhaps not, but as the Italians say, if it isn’t true it ought to be.

　　as部分是定语从句，修饰这个句子，if部分是条件状语从句，it部分才是主句，主句的it指代的就是前半句的that，也就是：“卡达斯描述的那些内容，就是那天发生的事情。”

　　这里ought to：应该...。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里是说，就算不完全是那样的，也应该是差不多的，还记的上文说到的卡达斯的写作是喜欢“修饰（添油加醋）”，所以，上一段中的描述可能也是有修饰的，但是，至少，应该不是虚构的，完全假的！

　　这个句子算是长难句了！

　　when部分是时间状语从句：whenCardus described a concert with thesame impressionistic gusto。

　　这里的the same impressionistic gusto指代的是第九段中说的，他的写作风格，就是印象派的。其实，在第十段中，那个场景的描写，只要你读了，就会对他描写的那个音乐家有很深的印象——即：一个很张狂的音乐家！

　　gusto n. 热情。

　　句子主干：one felt inclined to say the same thing,这里的one是泛指，所以可以翻译成“任何人，人们”

　　feel在这里是系动词，inclined to 部分是形容词短语作表语。比如：he writes only when he feels inclined to write.他只在想写的时候才写。

　　inclined to：趋向于...；想...；相信...。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里是说，就算他写作上可能会加以“修饰、润色”，但是，就算是修饰过的，人们也愿意相信事情就是他描述的那个样子。

　　for部分是原因状语从句，是个强调句：itwas his great gift to convey the essence of a musician in phrases so vivid that the near-complete absence of technical specificity almost always goes unregretted (if not unnoticed).

　　这个强调句，比较特殊，这里的hisgreat gift和thenear-complete absence of technical specificity指的是同一件事情，其实就是后者是对前者的解释，具体说明：

　　the near-complete absence of technical specificity，这里比较难理解，用词比较抽象

　　absence n. 缺席；不存在。

　　technical adj. 技术的；工艺的；技巧的。

　　specificity n. 具体性；明确性；特殊性。

　　【逻辑梳理】当然，单词都认识了，但是，你还是不知道它说的是什么，这里是说，卡达斯能够做到就算是对文章进行了“润色”，你也看不出来，就是说第九段里面的那样的描写，就算有夸张的成分，但是，读者读起来好像也没有“夸张”的感觉，就算卡达斯本人确实运用了比较“夸张的手法”，但是，读者读起来还是觉得浑然一体。这就是他的天赋所在。

　　to部分是不定式修饰gift：to convey the essence of a musician in phrases so vivid。

　　convey vt. 传达；表达。

　　phrase n. 词组；短语（这里是说语言的意思）

　　so vivid是状语，修饰convey。

　　unregretted adj. 没有遗憾的。括号里面进行了解释，就是说如果注意到的话，用了双重否定。

　　when部分是时间状语从句：When he writes ①thatArturo Toscanini’s conducting of Brahms sounds like “a sort of gigantic musical wheel revolving in a ruthless groove,” or ②that FritzKreisler’s violin playing “reminds me of a beautiful face that would be even more beautiful if it were lined or wrinkled,”

　　①和②部分是write的两个宾语从句：

　　①that Arturo Toscanini’s conducting of Brahms sounds like “a sort of gigantic musical wheel revolving in a ruthless groove,” 当他写道阿图罗·托斯卡尼尼的指挥的勃拉姆斯的音乐听起来像“一种巨大的音乐车轮在无情的槽轮中旋转,”

　　这里说得很抽象了。

　　gigantic adj. 巨大的（超纲词汇）。ruthless adj. 无情的。groove n.凹槽

　　②that Fritz Kreisler’s violin playing “reminds me of a beautiful face that would be even more beautiful if it were lined orwrinkled,”弗里茨·克莱斯勒的小提琴演奏“让我想起了一个美丽的脸，如果是布满皱纹的脸，那么，它会更加漂亮”

　　that部分是定语从句，修饰face。if部分是条件状语从句，it指代的是face。当然，这句话也看不懂他要表达什么意思，以为没有相关的知识背景。

　　lined adj.皱纹的 = wrinkled adj. 皱纹的

　　现在看主句：you take his point at once, and relate it effortlessly to your own memories of the performer in question.你立刻就能明白他说的事情，并且，很容易就把它与自己脑海中记得的相关音乐家（表演者）的表演联系起来。

　　take point这里表示：“理解某人说的点”就是一下子就明白过来的意思。

　　effortless adj. 容易的；不费力的。

　　in question：相关的；被提及的。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里是说，只要一个人读到卡达斯写的关于某个音乐家的文章时，立刻就能理解他说的是什么，而且，还很容易就将卡达斯所写的内容，与自己记忆中的内容联系起来。本质上是说，他写的文章其实给人印象是很深刻的，能够让读者产生共鸣和联想。

　　总结：第11段是说不管卡达斯所写的内容是不是有夸张、修饰、润色的的成分，他写的文章就是好，就是能够给人留下深刻的印象，能够吸引读者。
