①We are even farther removed from the discursive newspaper reviews published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II, at a time when newsprint was dirt-cheap and stylish arts criticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared.
句子主干是:we are removed from the discursive newspaper reviews......。
publishedin .....
cursive adj.
published in England between the turn of the 20th century and the eve of World War II那些评论是出版在英格兰,是在二十世纪初到二战前出版的。
at a time when ①newsprint was dirt-cheap and ②stylish artscriticism was considered an ornament to the publications in which it appeared.
publications 指上面说出版的评论物,it指代的是unfocused newspaper reviews. when是time的定语从句。in which部分定语从句,修饰publications
ornament:n. 装饰物 -- ornate v.
②In those far-off days, it was taken for granted that the critics of major papers would write in detail and at length about the events they covered.
这句话有个短语:take sth for granted:认为.......
events后面的they covered 是event的定语从句,省略了that。
in those far-off days
③①Theirs was a serious business, and ②even those reviewers who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shawand Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about.
Theirs was a serious business,他们的事业是严肃的。
Their business was aserious business
②句子主干:even those reviewers who wore their learning lightly, like George Bernard Shaw and Ernest Newman, could be trusted to know what they were about。
lightly adv.
④These men believed in journalism as a calling, and (these men) were proud to be published in the daily press.
believe in 相信。calling n.
⑤“So few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism,” Newman wrote, “that I am tempted to define ‘journalism’ as ‘a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are’.”
前面一个是:few authors have brains enough or literary gift enough to keep their own end up in journalism拥有足够的脑力或者足够的文学天赋去终生从事新闻业的人是如此的少。
keep sb do sth
end up in journalism
I am tempted to define ‘journalism’ as ‘a term of contempt applied by writers who are not read to writers who are
I am tempted to define‘journalism’ as ‘a term of contempt我将试图把新闻业定义成一个侮辱的术语
define A as B 将A定义成为B,就是认为A是B。journalism n.
contempt n.
applied by writers who are not read to writers who are。这里可以写成:contempt which is applied by writers who are not read to writers who are read这个侮辱性的术语是被那些没有学问的作者用于(描述)有学问的作者的。
read adj. aply sth to sth:应用;使用。
