　　名词后缀(一)

　　1.-an：

　　electrician n.电工;电气技师

　　E.g. The electrician took the houselights down.

　　电工将剧场中观众席上的灯光减弱了一点。

　　physician n. [医]医师，内科医师

　　E.g. He prefers to be a surgeon rather than a physician.

　　他喜欢当外科医生而不愿作内科医生。

　　2.-ant,-ent：

　　applicant n.申请人

　　E.g. The job applicant must have good verbal skills.

　　应聘这份工作的人必须具有良好的语言表达技能。

　　correspondent n.通信者

　　E.g. The newspaper has a foreign correspondent.

　　这家报纸有个外国通讯记者。

　　3.-ard：

　　coward n.懦夫，懦弱的人

　　E.g. She accused her husband of being a coward.

　　她指责自己的丈夫是个胆小鬼。

　　drunkardn.酒鬼，醉汉

　　E.g. That drunkard flung out the empty bottle.

　　那个醉汉把空瓶扔了出来。

　　4.-ee：

　　employee n.雇员

　　E.g. The boss dismissed that employee.

　　老板解雇了那个雇员。

　　examinee n.应试者

　　E.g. It required that every examinee put down his/ her name on the answer sheet.

　　要求所有考生都把自己的姓名写在答题纸上。

　　5.-eer：

　　pioneer n.开拓者，先锋

　　E.g. Li Dazhao was a pioneer of the Chinese revolution.

　　李大钊是中国革命的先驱。

　　volunteer n.志愿者

　　E.g. She now helps in a local school as a volunteer three days a week.

　　她现在作为一名志愿者每周三天在当地一所学校帮忙。

　　6.-er, -or：

　　manufacturer n.制造商

　　E.g. All the goods are labelled with the address of the manufacturer.

　　所有商品均标明了生产厂家的地址。

　　survivor n.幸存者

　　E.g. Officials said there were no survivors of the plane crash.

　　官方说这次飞机失事无一人生还。

　　名词后缀(二)

　　1.-ese：

　　Chin(a) + ese→Chinese n.中国人;汉语

　　E.g. Remember you are a Chinese wherever you go.

　　不论你到哪里，记住你是中国人。

　　Japan + ese→Japanesen.日本人;日语

　　E.g. Not only did he speak English well, but he spoke Japanese more easily.

　　他不但英语说得好，就连日语也讲得轻松自如。

　　2.-(r)ess：

　　host+ ess→hostess n.女主人

　　E.g. The hostess gave us a cordial greeting.

　　女主人热忱地欢迎我们。

　　act+ ress→actress n.女演员

　　E.g. The famous actress is now appearing at the Capital Theatre.

　　目前这位女演员正在首都剧场演出。

　　3.-ian：

　　logic+ ian→logician n.逻辑学家

　　E.g. As the founder of pragmatism, firstly and mostly Peirce was a logician.

　　作为实用主义的鼻祖，皮尔士首先和主要是一位逻辑学家。

　　mathematic+ ian→mathematician n.数学家

　　E.g. Einstein is identified with a higher mathematician.

　　爱因斯坦被列为高等数学家。

　　4.-ist：

　　drama+ (t)ist→dramatist n.剧作家

　　E.g. Shakespeare is, by common consent, the greatest English dramatist.

　　莎士比亚被公认是英国最伟大的剧作家。

　　dent+ ist→dentist n.牙科医生

　　E.g. The dentist told the boy not to eat too many sweets.

　　牙医告诫这男孩不要吃太多糖果。

　　5.-ster：

　　young+ ster→youngstern.年轻人

　　E.g. That youngster works with a will.

　　这小伙子干活有股傻劲儿。

　　gang+ ster→gangster n.歹徒

　　E.g. The police are hard on the track of the gangster.

　　警察正在追踪那名匪徒。

　　名词后缀(三)

　　1.-al：

　　approv(e)+ al→approvaln.同意，认可

　　E.g. They voiced their approval of the plan.

　　他们对这项计划表示赞成。

　　arriv(e)+ al→arrivaln.到达，到来

　　E.g. The arrival of him sparkled to the party.

　　他的到来使聚会变得生动活泼了。

　　2.-age：

　　short+ age→shortagen.缺乏，不足

　　E.g. The shortage of oil will probably drive prices up.

　　石油短缺很有可能迫使价格上涨。

　　shrink+ age→shrinkage n.收缩

　　E.g. There has been much shrinkage of the clothes in the wash.

　　这些衣服洗后已缩了很多。

　　3.-ance, -ence：

　　import + ance→importance n.重要性

　　E.g. The conference underscored the importance of modern industry.

　　会议强调了现代工业的重要性。

　　confid(e)+ ence→confidence n.自信心

　　E.g. Tom blames his lack of confidence on his mother.

　　汤姆把他的缺乏信心归咎于他母亲。

　　4.-ency：

　　consist + ency→consistency n.连贯性，一致性

　　E.g. There’s always a lack of consistency in matters of foreign policy.

　　外交政策总是缺乏连贯性。

　　urg(e)+ ency→urgency n.紧迫性

　　E.g. In case of urgency, call the police.

　　一旦发生紧急情况，打电话给警察。

　　5.-cy：

　　bankrupt + cy→bankruptcy n.破产

　　E.g. His failure knelled the bankruptcy of the company.

　　他的失败宣告了公司的破产。

　　diploma + cy→diplomacy n.外交

　　E.g. The government is placing its faith in international diplomacy.

　　政府对国际外交关系充满信心。

　　1.-dom：

　　free + dom→freedomn.自由

　　E.g. She bartered away her freedom for wealth.

　　她为财富而出卖了自由。

　　wis(e)+ dom→wisdomn.智慧

　　E.g. In this way they brought into full play the initiative, wisdom and power of the masses.

　　这样他们就使群众的积极性、智慧和力量都充分发挥出来。

　　2.-ery：

　　slav(e)+ ery→slaveryn.奴隶制

　　E.g. The slavery was overthrown after the Civil War in U.S.A.

　　在南北战争结束之后，美国的奴隶制被废除了。

　　brav(e)+ ery→bravery n.勇敢

　　E.g. The soldier deserves the award for his acts of bravery.

　　这名战士应为他的英勇行为受奖。

　　3.-hood：

　　man + hood→manhood n.男子气概

　　E.g. Her new-found power was a threat to his manhood.

　　她最近具有的能力对他的男子汉气概是个威胁。

　　neighbor+hood→neighborhood n.邻里

　　E.g. What happened in the factory is being whispered about the neighborhood.

　　工厂里发生的事正在附近居民中私下传说。

　　4.-sion, -tion：

　　deci(de) + sion→decision n.决定，决心

　　E.g. I don't think his decision is wise in reality.

　　实际上，我觉得他的决定并不明智。

　　descri(be)+ (p)tion→deion n.描写，描述

　　E.g. The scenery is beautiful beyond deions.

　　那风景美丽得难以形容。

　　5.-ity：

　　matur(e) + ity→maturity n.成熟

　　E.g. His performance was full of maturity and poise.

　　他的表现成熟而稳健。

　　visible + ity→visibility n.能见度，可见性

　　E.g. Dense fog is covering roads in the north and visibility is very poor.

　　浓雾笼罩了北部的公路，能见度很低。
