　　despite部分是让步状语：Despite a spell of initial optimism in the 1960s and 1970s when it appeared that transistorcircuits and microprocessors might be able to copy the action of the humanbrain by the year 2010,

　　spell n. 一段时间;魔力;vt. 拼读;拼写

　　initial adj. 最初的;开始的。—— initially adv. 最初;首先

　　optimistic adj. 乐观的。—— optimism n. 乐观主义。

　　when后面是定语从句，修饰20世纪60年代和70年代：when it appeared that transistor circuits andmicroprocessors might be able to copy the action of the human brain by the year2010,(这里的when可以换成during which)

　　这里的it是泛指，表示事情，其实是AI的发展状况，就是当时的人对AI的发展，有过一段乐观的时间。

　　这里的appear是系动词，表示好像，似乎，that部分可以说是表语从句，但是，it appears that...其实算是一种习惯用法，比如：It appears that she’s lost interest in her job. 看来她对自己的工作已失去兴趣。

　　现在看that部分：transistor circuits and microprocessors might be able to copy the action of the human brain by the year 2010,

　　transistor n. 晶体管

　　circuit n. 电路;巡回

　　microprocessor n. 微处理器

　　copy vt. 复制。

　　action n. 行动;行为;作用;功能

　　主句部分：researchers lately have begun to extend that forecast by decades if not centuries.但是，近来研究人员已经开始将这一预测延长几十年，甚至几个世纪。

　　extend vt. 延伸;扩张

　　that forecast指前半句说的“晶体管电路和微处理器似乎可以在2010年之前模仿人类大脑的活动(功能)”这件事情。

　　forecast n. 预测;预报;vt. 预测;预报。

　　if not：否则。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里是说，上世纪6—70年代的时候，由于晶体管和微处理器的发明，让当时的科学家一度以为，到2010年的时候，就可以实现人工智能(AI)(机器模仿人的大脑活动)，但是，后来科学家，发现，这太乐观了，2010年根本实现不了。不要说2010，可能接下来几十年，甚至是几百年都不能实现。

　　总结：第四段是说，要实现真正的AI还有很长的时间，要让机器人能够模拟人类大脑的活动，甚至能够自己做决定，这目前还实现不了，甚至是几百年后的事情。
