　　①That such a boy should have grown up to become a music critic for the Guardian is one of the more improbable occurrences in journalistic history-though it is still less probable that he should have started out as the Guardian’s cricket correspondent, and continued to cover the game even after he took over the paper’s classical-music beat. ②Indeed,it was as a writer on cricket that Cardus would always be most familiar to the public at large, eventually becoming so well known in that capacity that he was written up in Time in 1949. ③To the extent that he is remembered today,it is for such collections of his cricket dispatches as the post humously published Cardus on Cricket (1977), the only one of his books to remain in print.这样一个男孩子长大竟然成了《卫报》的音乐评论家，这是新闻业史上极不可能的事情之一，即使，他竟然是以《卫报》的板球记者的身份起家，并且，甚至在他接管了《卫报》的古典音乐板块之后还继续报道板球运动依然是不太可能的。事实上，他是以作为一个板球作家的身份而被普通大众所熟知的，最终，他板球作家的这一身份是如此的出名，以至于，在1949年，《时代周刊》都对他做了详细的报道。直到今天，人们还记得他的那些关于板球的集子，比如他死后出版的《卡达斯谈板球》(Cardus on cricket, 1977年)，这是他一本仍在印刷的书。

　　这是个让步状语从句，though部分就是让步状语从句。

　　先看主句：That such a boy should have grown up to become a music critic for the Guardian is one of the more improbable occurrences in journalistic history

　　这是一个主语从句，即，that部分是主语：That such a boy should have grown up to become a music critic for the Guardian即：这样一个男孩子长大竟然成了《卫报》的音乐评论家。

　　should have done：①表示“本来应该做某事而实际上没有做”；②表示“惊讶、惊奇、惊讶、不相信的语气”。

　　【逻辑梳理】这里就是说不敢相信，一个妓女的私生子长大了居然能够成为一个《卫报》的音乐评论家，这是很难想象的！这确实是这样的，因为，一个人如果出身非常低微的话，一般是不可能走入上流社会的，因为他无法接受好的教育，而，一个人，如果没有有接受过良好的教育的话，那是不可能怎么样的，更不可能成为音乐评论家。

　　句子表语部分：one of the more improbable occurrences in journalistic history是新闻业史上极不可能的事情之一。

　　probable adj. 可能的。--improbable adj. 不可能的（impossible）。

　　occur vi. 发生；出现。-- occurrence n. 发生的事情；存在。

　　journalistic adj. 新闻业的；新闻工作者的。

　　让步状语从句部分：though it is still less probable that he should have①started out as the Guardian’scricket correspondent, and ②continued to cover the game even after he took over the paper’s classical-music beat.即使，他竟然是以《卫报》的板球记者的身份起家，并且，甚至在他接管了《卫报》的古典音乐板块之后还继续报道板球运动依然是不太可能的。

　　it是形式主语，that部分才是真正的主语，先看that部分：that he should have①started out as the Guardian’s cricket correspondent, and ②continued to cover the game even after he took over the paper’s classical-music beat.

　　这里的should have done依旧是表示“惊讶，不敢相信的”意思。

　　① started out as the Guardian’s cricket correspondent,

　　start out as：以...起家；以...开始。

　　② continued to cover the game even after he took over the paper’s classical-music beat.

　　cover vt. 采访；报道；评论。take over：接管。beat n. （警察、记者等的）负责区。

　　【逻辑梳理】这句话，有点长，有点绕，就是说，他能够成为《卫报》的音乐评论家是完全不可能的，同样也不太可能的是，他居然是以《卫报》的板球运动报道记者起家的，而且，在他接管了古典音乐部分的工作以后，居然还能报道板球运动，这里主句和从句表达的都是惊讶，都是觉得NC（卡达斯）这样的一个人，居然可以做到这些事情，太不可思议了。因为，这些事情必须是要有点本事的人才能从事，尤其是古典音乐评论，估计在中国找不出几个来，在当时的英国也肯定不是随便一个人都可以的，但是，这样一个只接受过4年正式教育，一个妓女的私生子（说不定连他亲生父亲是谁都不知道的人）居然成了古典音乐评论家，太不可思议了！

　　②Indeed, it was as a writer on cricket that Cardus would always be most familiar to the public at large, eventually becoming so well known in that capacity that he was written up in Time in 1949.事实上，他是以作为一个板球作家的身份而被普通大众所熟知的，最终，他板球作家的这一身份是如此的出名，以至于，在1949年，《时代周刊》都对他做了详细的报道。

　　这是个强调句，这里强调的是as状语部分，他是作为一个板球作家而被普通大众所熟知的。

　　indeed adv. 确实；其实；真正地。

　　be familiar to：熟悉。

　　at large：普通的；一般的；未被逮捕的（用再名词后面）

　　the public：普通人；大众。这里是是the+ adj. 表示“一类人”，例如：the rich：富人。

　　eventually部分是结果状语，也可以看做是writer的分词后置定语：eventually becoming so well known in that capacity that he was written up in Time in 1949. 最终，他板球作家的这一身份是如此地出名，以至于，在1949年，《时代周刊》都对他做了详细的报道。

　　这里有一个so...that结构，表示“如此...以至于”。

　　in a particular capacity：身份；某种身份。

　　write up：（利用笔记等）详细写出。这里用的是被动。

　　write-up：评论；评价。（有连词符号和没有连词符号是不一样的哦！）

　　【逻辑梳理】上一句说，他是以板球作家的身份起家，后来才变为古典音乐评论家的。但是，他被普通大众所熟知的其实是他的板球作家这一身份，就是别人一提到他，立刻想到的就是他是一个板球作家，而非，古典音乐评论家。他的板球作家这个身份是太出名了，人尽皆知，以至于《时代周刊》都对他做了详细的报道。

　　③To the extent that he is remembered today, it is for such collections of his cricket dispatches as the post humously published Cardus on Cricket (1977), the only one of his books to remain in print.直到今天，人们还记得他的那些关于板球的集子，比如他死后出版的《卡达斯谈板球》(Cardus on cricket, 1977年)，这是他一本仍在印刷的书。

　　to the extent that：某某种意义/某种程度上说：using it in order to emphasize that a situation has reached a difficult, dengerous,or surprising stage.

　　EG：he said he did not like the president，butnot to the extent that he wanted to kill him。即：他说他不喜欢这个总统，但是，还没有到想要杀死他的地步。

　　it指代to部分的内容，就是人们还在怀念他

　　collection n. 作品集；集合。

　　dispatch n.派遣；派件；急件；新闻报道（这里是说他关于板球的报道合集）

　　posthumous adj. 身后的；死后的；死后发生的（加后缀：-ly，变副词）

　　the部分是同位语，对Carduson Cricket这本书做说明，卡达斯是1975年死的，上文有说到。

　　总结：第七段是说卡达斯这样一个人能够取得这样辉煌的成就是令人不可思议的，几乎是个奇迹。而且，今天，在某种意义上说，人们依旧还是记得他，他有一本书还在印刷出版。
